Farmer Health and Welfare
As part of Mars’ commitment to People, Planet and Performance, Mars Sustainable Solutions is developing technologies and business models which enhance the health and welfare of farmers in developing communities where we source our supplies. Our first area of commitment is to develop low-cost drinking water solutions.
Drinking Water Facts:
- Over 1 billion people lack regular access to clean and safe drinking water, that equals approximately 1:6 people
- 3.575 million people die each year from water-related disease.
- Every 15 seconds a child dies due to a lack of access to clean water
- The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns.
Investments
Mars is looking to develop low-cost water solutions as part of our commitment to people and the planet.
As part of this effort, Mars is working with HaloSource, Inc., a leading technology and anti-microbial technology company, as they develop cost effective, point of use water purification devices. Mars is an active investor and maintains a board position with HaloSource.
HaloSource has developed the Halo Pure® technology, a disinfection technology for clean drinking water. Beyond just filtration, the Halo Pure® technology purifies, producing safe, colorless, odorless water that is great tasting.
Over the last year Mars and HaloSource have partnered in an internship program that is exploring the use of this technology to provide clean drinking water for cocoa farming communities.
